Stormy Moana

After a day out to Langhorne Creek, we arrived back at Moana to meet my sister's family at the beach. Fortunately for me, we got there just before a massive storm front moved in from over the gulf, and I was able to get some spectacular shots before the rain came in (I don't yet have a hood for the camera). There was only one flash of lightning that we could see - but when the rain came in it dropped a good load of water, and caused flooding and damage along the coastal suburbs. Another stroke of luck was that I got there before all the kite-surfers packed it in (something about having a long string in the air when there's the threat of lightning) - so I got a few shots of them out on the water, too.

Street Art in Adelaide

Adelaide, like most major cities, has a vibrant street art scene - some are fully commissioned works by stores and businesses, others are allowed by the city council following approval, while yet more are either 'guerilla' art, or simple graffiti/vandalism. Here's a selection of works from around Adelaide that I took on a walk around the CBD last year.

Whatever your opinions on the more illegal end of street art, many of it is eye-catching, and much of it is thoughtful and thought-provoking. Of course, there are plenty of instances of completely thoughtless graffiti-tagging in the mix.

Please note: these pictures do not endorse illegal behaviour - they simply document some of the art seen on the streets of Adelaide.

This is a pretty good stretch of beach south of the city - it's usually pretty quiet, although you might not want to venture too far down from the car park (that is, unless you want to be in the nudist's section).

South Port

South Port Beach is a dune covered spit of land just south of Port Noarlunga. The Onkaparinga River empties into the sea here, and offers a sheltered beach which is popular for fishermen and kayakers, as well as a more sandy beach below the Surf Live Savers' Club. Across the river mouth from the beach are some spectacularly layered cliffs.

The South Australian coast is not all golden beaches (although there are plenty of them) - there are dramatic rocky limestone cliffs, and working seafronts, too. Marino is a little rocky outcrop just south of the main beach which runs from Seacliff all the way up to Glenelg. The strata in the cliffs along this stretch lift upwards, leaving a lot of long lines running parallel to the shore and cliff tops.

While not as dramatic as the Limestone Coast, or the Fleurieu Peninsula, there's still a lot of interesting sights along Marino - and there's a walking path all the way along from Hallett Cove to Seacliff (and beyond).

Burra

Burra started up as a mining town way back in the 1840s, and provided something like 5% of the world's supply of copper for about 15 years. Eventually, the mine started to run out, and no new lode was found, so many of the miners packed up and headed to the silver mine over at Broken Hill.

The town became a pastoral centre - a market town for the wheat and livestock farms ranging along the valley. It is now a the centre of an "historic district", and many of the old buildings and mine workings have been restored and maintained as a tourist attraction.

The Adelaide Moon Lantern Festival is an annual event held in the parklands near the River Torrens. It is a traditional Chinese festival that is incorporated as part of the larger OzAsia festival. I figured that the lantern parade held after sunset would be an interesting subject - unfortunately, it wasn't quite as spectular event as I'd hoped, but there was still plenty of opportunities for photography.

The River Murray takes a bend at Mildura, and flows over a weir. The lock at this point is built into a channel which separates a small island which is maintained as a natural reserve, and is a haven for birds (and popular for local anglers, too).

East of Mildura - about 950 kilometres along the River Murray from the coast - King's Billabong is a mixture of nature reserve and historic sites.

The river was once dotted with a number of steam-powered pumps providing water to the vast farmlands stretching away from the Murray. They've been replaced by electrically powered pumping stations and subsequently abandoned. Now, at least one of those old pumphouses is an historic site - unfortunately, I was there at the wrong time of day to get a look inside, but I did have a walk around the outside and some of the area around the Billabong.

I stopped at a number of towns along my way from Loxton to Mildura, the first of which was Berri. Berri started out as a service town supporting the fruit and wheat farms in the region, but is now a major tourist centre and is very popular for Adelaideans seeking weekends away from the city.

Loxton Historical Village

Loxton was my first stop on my driving tour out east from Adelaide, and I was pleasantly surprised to find an "historic village" on the banks of the River Murray there.

Historic villages are great places to wander around, with lots of old shops and houses, and bits and pieces. The Loxton village may not be as large as Teilam Bend, but it did seem to be in better condition. There was also a museum dedicated to the great flood of 1956 and the efforts to protect houses and people living along the Murray.

I suggest checking it out - it's a little bit of a drive out of Adelaide, but you can easily do it in a day. Or you can camp nearby.

Marion Village Girls

I drive up and down Marion Road a fair bit, and I've always been intrigued by a small statue of a girl looking into a well. I decided I'd head up there and actually have a walk around, and was pleasantly surprised to discover that this was part of an 'historic village' display around the original farm settlement in Marion.

Almost all of the land has now been built on, but a few of the old buildings from the original settlement still exist. As I wandered around, I found a fair few information plaques around, clearly marked with some paving around them so you could spot them from a distance and walk up to them.

I also found three other girls around the 'village' - there may be more, because one of the ones I did find was tucked away down a side street.

Morialta Falls

Morialta Gorge is one of the deep cuts in the Adelaide Hills which borders the city. It's a great location for a walk, with a range of moderate to strenuous walks which take in some spectacular views. There's also some abseiling and climbing to be had (although I didn't get that far along, although I plan to next time).

Winter is a good time to walk, as the valley is sheltered and cool, and rains add flow to the creek and its falls (there are three along the gorge).

A partial eclipse of the moon took place last night - I guess most people in Australia were aware of it.

I decided to camp outside for the 90 minutes or so which it took to get to the time of maximum shadow (I think about 50%).

I won't be uploading print versions - unfortunately, the 300mm is not quite powerful enough for this kind of work (I probably should search out a cheapish telescope and camera mount).

Sometimes it is surprising how quickly you can transition from the city and suburbs into the country. My friend Adam lives on a block that is tucked up a valley, just outside of Mitcham, and is regularly visited by kangaroos, koalas, and even deer. We took a walk around his block, which has been settled on for well over a hundred years.

Victor Harbour is an old settlement built around a whaling station on the southern coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Whaling stopped a long time ago when the whales stopped visiting the area, and the town is now a tourist destination (as well as the venue for 'schoolies' a week or so of partying for Adelaidean school-leavers).

The whales have slowly begun returning over recent years, and can be seen through the winter - so I and my parents took a drive down there to see if we could spot them. Unfortunately, we didn't see any, but we did get a good walk around Granite Island - a rocky outcrop in the middle of the harbour.

Middleton is a small town on the southern coastline of the Fleurieu Peninsula - a couple of hours drive from Adelaide. It's a popular spot for surfers, although I'm sure the water's pretty cold since there's nothing but icebergs to the south (well over the horizon, unfortunately).
