Gum trees are rather incredible - in a lot of cases, their roots actually grow into each other, so that a stand of gums may just as well be a single tree. They are also prodigious branchers - shooting out new growth every which way.
However, it isn't usual to see this kind of growth above ground, where it appears the tree on the left has branch and then grown through the tree on the right. The extra growth between the two trunks probably means that this merging happened when the trees were a lot younger and has continued.
